Deciphering VIN and Chassis plates

The VIN plate contains a lot of very useful information about the car, and details the equipment the car was originally built with. The following should help you identify useful information such as the paint code, the interior trim code, and the suspension code should you need to order replacements.

The VIN plate is located on the inner wing at position 1 in the diagram below. The VIN number is also located on the dashboard (position 2) in US market cars, and is stamped into the body just above the bulkhead (position 2a) for other markets.

Items 3, 4, 5, 6 form the Type Approval code - these are not present on the VIN plate in most markets
